A woman’s fertility potential declines with age,8 but age alone does not give a full picture of her fertility status. When a woman is born, her ovaries contain a lifetime supply of eggs and as she ages, so do those eggs. Before the time she starts ovulating and until menopause, she will lose eggs each month.
What is Ovarian Reserve?
Ovarian Reserve is a measure of the age of your ovaries and their ability to respond to Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) in order to produce eggs capable of fertilization.
How is Ovarian Reserve Tested?
Measuring levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) on day 3 of a woman’s period is a clinically established method of assessing Ovarian Reserve. FSH is an important hormone in the conception process because it stimulates the ovary to produce a mature egg. In general, women with elevated levels of FSH on cycle Day 3 have a reduced chance of unassisted conception compared with women of the same age.9
Ovarian Reserve is one of the first things that physicians measure in a fertility evaluation. Dr. Charles Kingsland, a leading fertility specialist, gives this analogy of FSH. "Follicle stimulating hormone is a bit like the accelerator on a car: If your car engine is of very high quality, you don’t have to press the accelerator very hard to make it go. If your car, however, is older or not such a sporty model then you have to press the accelerator harder for it to work. This is exactly what happens with the ovary. If your ovary contains good quality eggs, your brain recognizes this and it doesn’t have to work so hard to drive your ovary to mature and release them, hence the FSH level is low. If, however, your eggs are older or abnormal for any reason, then your brain also recognizes this and as a consequence, the FSH level is much higher."3
In addition, stress may play a role in conception. Although the verdict is still out on whether stress specifically can cause conception difficulties, doctors agree that this kind of stress is detrimental to general health.
