Importance of Motile Sperm



Before conception occurs, sperm must endure a long journey. After ejaculation, they must travel up the cervix, through the uterus and to the fallopian tubes. During this process, tens of millions of sperm will not make it. If the time is right and everything goes correctly, a sperm will reach the egg and attempt to fertilize it.

What are Motile Sperm?

Motile sperm are those sperm that can readily swim in order to reach and fertilize an egg. Non-motile sperm will not reach the egg. For example, a male can have 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen, but if none of them are motile, there will be no sperm able to reach the egg for conception to occur. That is why it is so crucial to test sperm motility, not just sperm count.  

The World Health Organization guideline is at least 10 million motile sperm per ml of semen1.

How are Motile Sperm tested?

Laboratory testing at your doctor’s office has been the standard way to evaluate motile sperm. But now, Fertell’s technology delivers the first at-home fertility test that allows you to evaluate the concentration of motile sperm with lab quality accuracy. Any other test available in a drug store will not evaluate sperm motility. Fertell is the only at-home test that can accomplish this.
